What is 3d Metrology
3D metrology is the science and practice of measuring the physical world in three dimensions to determine size, shape, form, and spatial relationships with high precision. Using advanced tools such as laser trackers, coordinate measuring machines (CMMs), structured light scanners, laser radar, and photogrammetry systems, professionals capture millions of data points that define real-world objects in digital space. This data is compared against CAD models or engineering drawings to verify accuracy, ensure compliance with tolerances, and validate that parts and assemblies meet design intent.
In modern manufacturing and engineering, 3D metrology plays a critical role in quality control, process optimization, and product development. Industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive, shipbuilding, energy, and heavy equipment rely on precise measurement to reduce rework, improve efficiency, and maintain safety and regulatory compliance. As products become larger, more complex, and more digitally integrated, 3D metrology serves as the foundation that connects design, manufacturing, and inspection—ensuring that what is built in the real world matches what was engineered in the digital one.
WHat is CMS?
The Coordinate Metrology Society (CMS) is an international professional association dedicated to advancing the science and application of portable and large-scale 3D metrology. CMS serves engineers, metrologists, manufacturers, researchers, educators, and technology providers who rely on precision measurement to build and verify complex products. Through technical education, industry collaboration, and standards development, CMS supports the professionals who ensure dimensional accuracy across aerospace, defense, shipbuilding, automotive, energy, and other high-precision industries.
At the center of CMS is the annual Coordinate Metrology Society Conference (CMSC), a globally recognized event where experts share peer-reviewed technical papers, emerging technologies, case studies, and best practices. CMS also supports workforce development through the CMS Certification program and the CMS Foundation, helping cultivate the next generation of metrology professionals. By connecting thought leaders, solution providers, and end users, CMS strengthens the global measurement community and drives the continued evolution of 3D metrology.

CMS Foundation
The CMS announces the establishment of the Coordinate Metrology Society Foundation (CMSF)—a newly formed charitable arm of CMS.
Special Opportunity: Inspire Future Innovators in Metrology in the Exhibit Hall at the 2026 CMSC!
This initiative aims to introduce students to 3D metrology, foster curiosity in STEM careers, and highlight the cutting-edge technology our exhibitors provide.
If you’d like to participate by showcasing your technology and speaking briefly to small groups of students, we’d love to include your company. Attendees will be guided through the hall in small groups by CMS and Boys & Girls Club staff, stopping at selected booths to engage with our exhibitors.  The tour will be provided by Joe Sabol, Scott Sandwith, Bobby Martinez, Paul Nicholas, Rick Cole, Bonnie Dunbar, and Jeff Dewar.

Volunteer WIth CMS
Ultimately, the reasons to volunteer are personal and varied. People volunteer for a multitude of reasons, and the benefits extend not only to those receiving assistance but also to the volunteers themselves. It’s a way to connect with others, make a difference, and contribute to the well-being of society as a whole. Here are some areas you may find to inspire you to volunteer.
- Â Helping Others: One of the primary motivations for volunteering is the desire to help others. Volunteering allows individuals to make a positive impact on their communities, support causes they care about, and assist those in need.
- Sense of Purpose: Volunteering can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment. It allows individuals to feel that they are contributing to something larger than themselves, which can boost self-esteem and overall well-being.
- Building Relationships: Volunteering often involves working with other like-minded individuals. This can lead to the development of strong social bonds, new friendships, and a sense of belonging to a community.
